Today forums play an Important role to getting backlinks for your site but ,some times due to incomplete knowledge many people put there signature every post it is not a right way.i suggest you to only join that part of forum which was related to your niche. we are not here for spamming and getting blackhat baclinks. if you get the link from a realted forum,google would consider those baclinks for increasing your page rank .It is not like that the links from unrelated forum will not pass link juice to your site ,but the juice is very less as compared to get the link juice from a related forum

so try ,while comment on any thread or creating your own thread on forums which include your site signature or link remeber that they are related to your niche .so you get the 100% natural one way link which are most valuable.
note:- remember one thing that lots of links from unrelated forum may harm your site or niche ranking
so be carfull
